Kanso Building

A contemporary courtyard nestled between two buildings, designed entirely above an underground parking structure, where geometry, function, and carefully balanced green volumes shape the space. The limited planting depth creates a unique challenge, making every plant, height, and texture an integral part of the overall composition. Liquidambar, tamarisk, Japanese cherries, cotoneaster, laurel cherry, and a diverse selection of seasonal plants create a layered landscape that changes throughout the year while defining intimate spaces, circulation areas, and places for rest. With time, the planting will continue to develop and reveal the full volume and character of the original landscape concept.

Realization

2023-2025

Geometry, function, and carefully balanced green volumes shape this courtyard, nestled between two buildings and built entirely above an underground parking structure. The limited planting depth transforms the project into an interesting challenge, where every plant, height, and texture has a specific role.

The composition is created through a play of different levels, forms, and seasonal accents. Between the geometric volumes of the concrete planters, different spaces for the residents are formed — more intimate green corners, circulation areas, and places for short moments of rest. In this way, the landscaping does not simply complement the architecture, but actively contributes to the organization of the courtyard and the way it is used.

Liquidambar trees introduce height, lightness, and a strong seasonal effect, while tamarisks and Japanese cherry trees create a spring landscape in shades of pink. Cotoneaster gradually forms low green carpets and softens the geometry of the concrete planters, while cherry laurel provides a dense, year-round green frame. These are complemented by numerous other species with different structures, flowering periods, and character, creating a garden that changes with the seasons and gradually reveals its volumes.

From this point on, all that is needed is a little patience and time for the planting to fully develop and for the original concept to reach its completed form.
